AKA: HoNDA Links

Update: Kara is organizing a call in day on Monday to oppose the bill. Check it out.

We’ve been following as much reading on the bill as we can. We actually got most of these links from other bloggers writing about the bill. There are a fair number of these that I haven’t read before. If that’s the case, its nice to meet you (virtually speaking).

Holt – 3. Childhood in History

Filed under: Escape from Childhood - John Holt, On Books — by Ron on September 25, 2005 @ 8:30 pm

On this subject, I probably have a better sense of the point at which
John Holt is driving at in this chapter than in most other ones. In the prehistory
article
, I wrote that I had grown up on a homestead type operation. I
came from a large family and much of the work we did, we did by hand. I
can remember the first tractor arriving, when I was nine. Because I was
the smallest person who was big enough to do so, I can remember driving
it when I was nine.

Unschooling For Adults

Filed under: General — by Ron on September 23, 2005 @ 10:22 pm

This has been reposted from out sister site atypicalife. I wrote the paper over 2 years ago. It came to mind recently and I thought it would be a worthwhile read here. The relevance from my perspective is that it would be worth considering the needs of adult learners and using that as a basis for the development of an educational strategy for our children. I suggest that approach because most of the ‘official line’ on educating children assumes the classroom environment and compulsory attendance of the child.

Stuffing the Ballot Box

Filed under: Articles, In the news — by Ron on September 22, 2005 @ 10:20 pm

Until today, we believed that the polls we had posted on the site would be honourably used. We were not aware that they could be so easily manipulated. As of 9 AM (EDT) this morning, our poll on the question ‘Would you vote for the “Home School Non-Discrimination Act of 2005″‘ had a total of 11 votes (each from a different internet address) as follows:

yes – as it stands – 0 votes
yes – with changes – 0 votes
no – 11 votes

You MUST be a registered forum user to vote, and you will only be allowed to vote ONCE. Be sure to read the Registration Agreement before joining the forum.

Ron will have a detailed report later this evening.

Holt – 2. The Institution of Childhood

Filed under: Escape from Childhood - John Holt, On Books — by Ron on September 21, 2005 @ 8:29 pm

“We might think of human life as a sort of curve… for every human
being that curve is a single curve, a wholeness.” (P. 25)

This is something that most home educators come to realize somewhere in
their career. But it is easy to understand how parents who send their
children off to school for 12 or more years do not see it.

“We do not, like some insects, suddenly turn from one kind of creature
into another that is very different.” (P. 25)

Holt – 1. The Problem of Childhood

Filed under: Escape from Childhood - John Holt, On Books — by Ron on September 19, 2005 @ 8:27 pm

I’m going to revise my earlier statement regarding a synopsis. In
reality, I will mostly be quoting the sentences or ideas that struck me
at first pass and writing some commentary on the quotes. With most
books when I read them, some things stand out the first time around.
But in many cases, I have reread a book a few times and noticed
different things during each reading.

Preface

Filed under: Escape from Childhood - John Holt, On Books — by Ron on September 17, 2005 @ 8:26 pm

Today, Andrea and I stopped by a second hand book sale in support of a
non-profit organization. In 20 minutes or so, we had picked out about
10 books. As I got to the end of the last table, I spotted “Escape from
Childhood” in white letters on a black background. Then I noted the
author was John Holt. It was hardcover and we were running on a tight
budget so I put back 2 of the others I had selected. After getting
home, I checked for it on Amazon and found that every edition of it was
out of print.

State Control…is necessary?

Filed under: Articles, Public Education — by Ron on September 13, 2005 @ 10:18 pm

State control of education is necessary, because it ensures
the transmission of commonly held American cultural values essential to
the population of our institutions. via Spunky
