Gentoo - It's my third. And each of the others are still installed on the original computer I installed them on. I have vector on a P2-266 and Fedora Core on this one. I have Gentoo running and it recognizes all my hardware. The spot I worked on for a couple nights was getting kde up and running. The kids use the vector one and like it because they are safe from virtually all malware.

Ah Gentoo. For some reason it was decided that my first distro would be Gentoo. After several 3-4 hour sessions that all failed on compile, I decided to go with Red Hat. Eventually (after passing through a Knoppix HD install - how much further from Gentoo can you get?) I migrated to Ubuntu. I expect that you have rather more expertise than I did though, and hopefully more luck with the compiling.

In any case, it sounds like a great homeschool opportunity. What do the kids think about it?
