The book they were reading was <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0152024646/sr=8-1/qid=1141654252/ref=sr_1_1/103-6785920-2063818?%5Fencoding=UTF8" rel="nofollow">I Am the Mummy Heb-Nefert</a>. Note it says for grades 4-6, which I think it just silly.

So satisfying. I love those sort of moments. I distinctly remember being caught off guard when it became apparent that Ds was reading stuff I thought he couldn't (and was thoroughly enjoying himself in the bargain, since he realised we didn't know and that this put him at some sort of an advantage!)

We have a friend whose son is studying Maths at one of the most prestigious universities in the UK and they never once did formal maths instruction with him until he went to school at 16 to do A levels. He had no problem at all going from no formal maths to A level and then getting nearly 100% every single time.
