A Trip Down Memory Lane

Next week I start teaching a course in basic computer skills. I had a meeting about the content of the course today. One of the topics is the internet. Other than having a base knowledge of what the internet is and what it involves, the main thing they would like the students to be able is research using search engines. After the meeting I decided I would look up search engines. Once I had my list, I tried to think of something to search for that wouldn’t produce a million hits. I hope it wasn’t vanity that prompted me to search for my first name + my last name.

I’ve done this a couple times before, but it has been at least a year since I had. This time I found alot more than I had the last time. If you were inclined to repeat the search here’s a summary of what you’d find:

I’m not Ron, the real estate agent in Florida. Apparently, his son and namesake has also joined the family business.

This is nearly my oldest notoriety. (I had made the paper and been on TV years before that, but I doubt I’ll find evidence of either of those on the internet). When I graduated from college, I took a job as a computer room operator/junior systems programmer. 5 months after I was hired, my boss left and they didn’t replace him. I was asked to write an interface (in spare time I had while still doing the job) that would allow a non-technical person take the operator position. So, at 7 months out of college, I became a supervisor. It was the first instance where I programmed my way out of a job.

There are also a fair number of links out there that I owe to Andrea. Here are a couple: canadaeast, Bread N Molasses.

There are also a few links from the homeschool conference I did the workshop at. I’m the second last photo on the bottom. I rarely stand still while I’m teaching.

Then, I found some thanks to some of my former students:
Rate My Professor
Bruno
Colin
Jeremy
Rick
They’ve reminded me that I need to send some of them an email to see how they are doing.

The last one I found really threw me though because it was totally unexpected. Should I take the price that he’s asking for it used as a compliment? It left me a bit unsettled for the rest of the day.
